What are your Sewing Resolutions for 2013?
Happy New Year!

I thought I’d kick off the my first post of the new year by discussing that thing that I hate to talk about the most. I. Hate. Resolutions.
Why? Because I fail. FAIL. FAIL!!! I fail at every resolution I’ve ever made. So typically I avoid even making them. This way I can’t disappoint myself.
But what about Sewing Resolutions? Maybe I can keep some of those. Maybe one. Can you? I’ll tell you what my sewing resolutions are for 2013 and you tell me yours, then we can come back here next year and see how we did. What do you think?
- Organize my sewing room – I had it organized, but I just can’t seem to keep it that way when the project bug strikes. As you might imagine, after the holiday hullabaloo, it’s a disaster area. I keep telling people that I’m keeping the door closed because we don’t want our new puppy in the upstairs rooms, but in truth, you need a hazmat suit to enter.
- Learn how to sew a zipper – What is my fear? No zippers, no buttons. I only sew things that do not need to close.
- Sew a scarf – I know, it’s silly. I’ve seen so many of you make beautiful scarves and I wanna do it too. In lots of different colors.
- Just cut it already! – Have you ever not wanted to touch your fabric stash because you are afraid that down the road you will be sorry for using it? I wait around for the perfect project for each beautiful print and I end up frozen like a deer in headlights. I just gotta get cutting!
- Use what I have – Stop buying more fabric, no matter how great the sale is, until I use up some of what I already have!
- Figure out how to sew strong – One thing I’ve found is that commercial puppy toys come apart pretty quickly. I want to figure out a way to reuse some of the stuffing (which is of course dangerous to doggie once they’ve ripped the toy) and the squeaker and make something new. Repurposed dog toys. Hmm.
- Make at least one project from every sewing book I own – Sewing books are pretty on the shelves, aren’t they? But I have a bad habit of using them for decoration instead of sewing. I want to use them, not just look at them!
What about you? What do you want to accomplish? I reserve the right to amend this list if you type something really good that I want to steal and add to my resolutions list…haha!

I repurposed a squeaker and stuffing from a destroyed dog toy and made a new one with some towelling – I sewed all the seams 4 times and it has withstood the rough treatment my toy-destroying dog gave it! In fact the squeaker gave up the ghost before he managed to get it out!
These are great tips, the one I am worst at is cutting up my fabric stash. It’s so silly but I don’t want to spoil it. I will ensure I do plenty of cutting and sewing this tear!
I know what you mean! I’m afraid to destroy perfectly good fabric and then be really disappointed!
good resolutions!
i am going to try and do some sort of handwork one hour every day…embroidery, cross stitch, quilting/EPP…but i think i will also try and incorporate some of your resolutions. thanks!
I love embroidery. I am terrible at hand stitching. I should include some practice of that in my list.
I agree with all your new year resolutions. I too want to start using up some of my pretty fabrics that I have hoarded but am too frightened to use in case I mess up the projects, etc. My main resolution though is to make sure my daughter’s patchwork blanket (made from her old baby/toddler clothes) is complete in time for next New Year (that was actually last year’s resolution!)
) Happy New Year!
I’m sure that patchwork blanket is fantastic! A great idea. Again, I agree, I don’t want to cut and mess up my pretty fabric. It was easier for me when I had my fabric shop and had bolts of it instead of small yardage or just half yards!
I like your resolutions. I’ll copy the last one: sew something from every sewing book (I’ll add sewing magazines). And I’m sorry But I laughed about the one:”Use what I have”. That one is very difficult and I even made a joke once of that mission being impossible and pure wishful thinking. But hey, you say: “not buying intil you use some” and “some” makes it all better.
Another resolution of mine in sewing is to buy a new sewing machine. Mine is giving me trouble.
Happy New Sewing Year!!
Very good resolutions! Especially the last three…these will be the mine too!
