In doing a search about wrapping gifts with fabric as an eco-friendly alternative to paper wrapping paper, I came across a term with which I wasn’t familiar on the blog, Sustainable Baby Steps.  According to Wikipedia furoshiki “are a type of traditional Japanese wrapping cloth that were frequently used to transport clothes, gifts, or other goods.”

An article in the Etsy Blog that dates back to 2009 covered the topic with a few examples.

Since we’re all about fabric and inspiration here at The Fabric Shopper, I thought furoshiki seems like a natural earth friendly alternative for those of us with fabric addictions…and now no one really will think you are strange for ironing and folding your gift wrap!

Also from Sustainable Baby Steps is a link to the Ministry of the Environment Government of Japan that gives specific techniques for different types of packaging.  This image will be small, but click on it to go to the resource on the govt site for a better view.

  1. We’ve been making and selling furoshiki on our website, and have how-to images of our own that might help. For my fellow fabric nuts, here are a few tips: 1. In general, use fabric that is sturdy but thin, ideally, so you can make a nice tight and secure knot. The smaller the gift, the lighter the fabric should be. The fabric can be delicate, but should be able to endure knotting. Silk is great, as is cotton batiste or any shirt-weight fabric. A pant-weight fabric is too thick and won’t knot well, but if you DO want to use some fabric that is rather thick, you can skip the knotting, and simply gather the fabric up above the gift in a whalespout. Secure with a rubber band if you like, and tie with a ribbon or scrap of other fabric. 2. For a gift of wine, you can knot a carrier that will keep the wine somewhat insulated and keep bottles from knocking together. This is perfect for host/ess gifts! See our website for more: http://www.luluwraps.com and cheers!

If only presents were wrapped in fabric, I would be more interested in the wrapping than the gift. Just like a baby :)
