Do you know Margot Bianca? She is an artist and independent designer of hand dyed and painted batiks ~ cotton, silk, floursacks. She wrote me the other day to introduce herself and to let me know that she is having a contest through a new Flickr page that she began to allow past, current, and future purchasers of her fabrics to showcase their creations made with her lovely batiks and hand painted fabrics.
I’m a studio artist, and I enjoy selling my functional work in my Etsy shop. My etsy batiks are influenced and informed by the ancient arts of textile designs from Indonesia and India. I use antique Indonesian copper batik stamps, carved foam stamps and tjanting tools to create my patterns. All of the batiks in my shop are hand printed, painted or drawn by me. I apply melted wax to the fabric, then dye it. The wax acts as a resist and doesn’t allow the dye to penetrate the fibers.
After dyeing, the wax must be removed from the fabric. I use the boiling method, which ensures that each batik piece can easily withstand even the hottest machine washing!During dyeing, the melted wax cracks in places, giving the batiked fabric its characteristic veiny lines and textures. Even after boiling and washing the fabric, the fibers will remain stiff from the wax for a while. The more you wash the fabric, the softer and more absorbent it will become.
All of my products are made out of 100% natural fibers of some sort, because only those fibers will accept a the types of dyes that I use. MARGOT BIANCA
