A new collection from Anna Maria Horner for Free Spirit: Little Folks printed on voile fabric, has been added to the Fabric Gallery. This collection is inspired by and coordinates with her Good Folks collection, but with smaller scale prints designed for little ones. I’m not sure if this will eventually be printed on quilting cotton, but right now it appears that only voile will be available. For those of you unfamiliar with voile, it is an apparel fabric.

From Emma One Sock: “Voile is a semi-sheer, soft fabric, perfect for beautiful garments. The fabric is generally made from natural fibers such as linen, silk, cotton, or a combination of these fibers. The resulting fabric is soft and delicate. You’ll love the elegance of this fiber combination, as well as the beautiful colors and prints.”

From WiseGeek: “Cotton voile is used to make lingerie, baby clothes, blouses and skirts. It is also popular for making romantic sheer drapes that pool on the floor. It looks very much like gauze and is summer weight and breezy.”

It appears that this would be a venture into apparel fabrics by Anna Maria Horner. What do you think? I know Heather Ross’ Far Far Away double gauze sent many out of their comfort zones. Are you excited to try sewing with fabrics other than quilting cottons (although, I’m sure many of you already do). But, many Anna Maria Horner fans are used to quilting cottons. Personally, I’m excited. I’m not always thrilled about the drape of quilting cottons when making some types of garments. Is this the beginning of a new trend?

I adore Anna Maria and all her prints, and am super excited about this collection. Some folks who haven’t used voile before might not know how soft and cool it is–makes amazing summer quilts! The fall release date should give us all plenty of time to stitch up a nice quilt and get comfortable with this fabric before Anna Maria’s next sewing book–geared at sewing for babies–is released.

    Hooray for variety!

One more thing, yes, I do think this is an interesting designer trend–kind of like when everyone started doing home dec weights. A welcomed though…I don’t think people who buy AMH and her peers are strictly quilters, in fact, I’d say most of them have young children they’d like to sew for, so, a good move by FreeSpirit/AMH.

Yeah, I too am excited about these. I just made myself a top using from Good Folks quilting. Have to admit, since I’m in Utah I’m a little bummed this voile is being released late in the summer. It would’ve been more welcomed a few months ago…but there’s always next summer, right? Thanks for letting me know. I follow her blog and don’t think she’s said anything about it yet.

  4. I love anything Anna Maria Horner, so I’m sure I’ll be picking up some of her new line — I didn’t know they were voile! How fun, I enjoy sewing with various textures, especially for my 14 month old. Thanks for sharing! :)

i am excited to see her new line, though i really like most of the good folks print. as for sewing on something other than quilting cotton, i agree voile will have better drape for certain pattern. i really like that house print on the top right hand corner. in regards to HR prints on double gauze, i dont mind sewing on double gauze, i just wished her FFA collection is less "juvenile", though I’ve been thinking of sewing myself a top from the unicorn print..hahaha
